The availability of clean water has emerged as one of the most critical problems facing society and the global economy in the 21st century. By 2030, it is estimated that 50% of the world population will live in areas of high water stress. Future water shortages could be alleviated with the developments of energy-efficient and cost-effective technologies to desalinate seawater while recovering energy and valuable metals/elements. In this international workshop on water, we will discuss the state-of-the art and future of water transport and treatment materials. Specific topics that will be discussed this year include, in particular, the science and technology of low dimensional materials (e.g., carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other 2D materials, and etc) for water transport and treatments.
